Restoring a Century of History: The 115 Singer Treadle "Grandmother's Legacy"
The Challenge: A Century of Rust and a Broken Heart This Singer 115 arrived at my shop in a state that would make most restorers walk away. It wasn't just the decades of surface rust on the treadle base; the real issue was deep inside the machine. A critical internal component—an essential cast iron part—had snapped. On a machine this rare, you cannot simply buy a replacement. With over 20 years of experience, I knew this was a "make or break" moment for a cherished family heirloom that belonged to the client's grandmother.
Engineering the Impossible: Three Trips to the Machinist Restoring a vintage machine is 10% cleaning and 90% engineering. To save this 115, I had to take the broken cast iron part to a local machinist. It took three separate trips to ensure the new part was machined to the exact tolerances needed for the machine to sew again. While the part was being perfected, I performed a complete mechanical teardown, meticulously cleaning every gear and adjusting the timing to ensure the new component would integrate seamlessly.
The Science of Restoration: The Electrolysis Bath To handle the heavy rust on the treadle stand without damaging the original metal, I used an electrolysis bath. This process uses an electrical current to pull the rust off the iron, leaving a clean surface ready for refinishing. It’s a slow, careful process, but for a machine with this much sentimental value, it’s the only way to do it right.
The Artistry: Tiffany Decals and Real Gold Leaf Once the mechanical "skeleton" was healthy, it was time for the "jewelry." The Singer 115 is famous for its stunning Tiffany (Gingerbread) decals, and I worked to bring their gold lacing back to a brilliant shine.
To take the restoration a step further, I repainted the iron treadle base and hand-applied genuine gold leaf to the raised "SINGER" lettering and the ornate trademark emblem. This highlights the incredible 1910s craftsmanship and turns the iron stand into a work of art.
The Result: Ready for the Next Generation Though the cabinet remains in its original, honest condition, the machine itself is a miracle of mechanical survival. It is now fully functional, treadle-powered, and sewing as smoothly as it did when the client's grandmother first sat down to it over a hundred years ago. It’s an honor to keep these stories alive in Richmond and the Greater Houston area.
